Interested in becoming a Product Manager?

A few months ago, a friend who is a fantastic Engineer asked me if I thought they’d be a good Product Manager.  He’s amazingly smart and a terribly hard worker, so I’m sure he could do the job if necessary, but would he actually enjoy it?  There are a lot of resources out there that tell you what Product Management is.  But would he actually enjoy it?

I spent a good half hour describing the tasks involved in product management to him and to be honest I don’t know if I touched on everything that the job entails.  There's a big difference between hearing someone describe a job or talk about it on a high level as opposed to digging into the nitty-gritty components that make up the job.  The stuff you actually do everyday...

In the future I’m going to refer people who ask those questions to the Coursera Product Management specialization.  It’s a nice little 5-part course you can do for free and it gives you some background on what it means to be a PM.  I’m a big fan of Coursera in general and this course is fairly comprehensive and talks about everything from product fit to Agile planning.  At the end of that course you’d know whether or not you’re interested in Product Management or not!
